Agrasen ki Baoli : A stepwell from Mahabharata era

What an awesome day it was when I visited 'Agrasen ki Baoli'. Such a tranquil place that makes you feel its presence in the midst of the metropolitan city's chaotic lifestyle. I always feel thrilled while en route to such historical monuments and what exactly I had felt when I saw Agrasen ki Baoli very first time. Unlike other baolis, this baoli is only 60 meters long and 15 meters wide which is not that much gigantic. Still, its rustic charm compels you to adore it. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) which comes under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958 has given the designation of a protected monument to this baoli. This place is situated on Hailey road which is near to Connaught Place, Delhi.

It hasn't had any historical record of its establishment; nevertheless, it is believed that legendary king from Mahabharata era had built this baoli. The current architecture depicts that this stepwell has been rebuilt during the Tughlag period in 13-14 century. This place is seen as architectural marvel because of its three stories and 108 steps which take you to the well that is situated at the end of these steps. If legends would be believed the black water inside this well used to hypnotise people and force them to commit suicide. Well, if you ask my opinion, I seriously don't believe in such stories. However, such stories have make this place famous as a haunted one. I don't know whether it is because of this story or anything else but some people have claimed that they have heard some mysterious noises around this baoli.

When I was there I didn't feel for a single second that I am in the busiest city of India (Delhi) because the design and architectural style take you to the ancient era. This baoli counts as one of the best historical places in India only because of its alluring beauty.  I was fascinated by such great work and effort which was put into making such wonderment of the history. This place has always been the favourite of the film industry because of its exceptional architecture and the earthy ambience. For that reason, many films' shootings have been taken place here in the last many years. That trip of mine didn't take the whole day to complete still those 108 steps were very difficult to climb.
